Ian Hume - Conservation Engineering Teaching

Ian Hume offers courses, usually a day or two in length, which will be useful to conservation professionals and craftspeople wishing to understand more about how buildings work, structural failures and what minimal structural interventions can be applied.

Seminar topics include the philosophy of conservation from an engineering viewpoint, how structures work and why they sometimes fail, scaffolding, temporary works, structural monitoring, load testing, floor loadings and various methods of minimal intervention into buildings and structures constructed from a variety of materials and ages. The Landmark Trust

The Landmark Trust looks after over 200 historic buildings. Each has been restored with appropriate care, craft and attention to its historic detail. Learning with Experts

‘Conservation of Historic Gardens’ is an online course, offered by Learning with Experts as 4 video tutorials. The course delivers both an outline and a deeper philosophical and practical approach to managing change in heritage landscapes. It teaches the philosophy of conservation, exploring the concepts of restoration, recreation and replicas. A full range of resources and techniques are discussed for researching sites, which is essential to understanding heritage context. Participants prepare a Statement of Significance, which defines why a heritage site is worthy of conservation, identifies its vulnerabilities, and underpins how it should be managed. Strategies are taught that support a sensitive and considered response to the many forms of change that threaten historic gardens.

Each tutorial is accompanied by an assignment that participants complete with the support of the tutor, and with the opportunity to chat with fellow classmates through a virtual classroom.

Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich

MSc in Architectural Design for the Conservation of Built Heritage, University of Strathclyde

The course is design-oriented, informed by practice and research and follows ICOMOS Guidelines. Students take instructional classes, a conservation design project and a dissertation project. Come and hear about our holistic approach to training and education in the built heritage sector. We are rare in being a Local Authority that delivers both statutory Listed Building and Conservation Area consent services and support to homeowners, specifiers and contractors about the processes and skills they might need to appropriately care for our historic buildings.

Our approach is to ensure that heritage knowledge and skills become the norm amongst every contractor or specifier. Our goal is to ensure all buildings, not just listed buildings, are cared for appropriately for the benefit of future generations.

Vernacular Architecture Group

We are a charity, formed in 1952 to further the study of lesser traditional buildings, mainly in the British Isles. We organise a 4-day conference each spring in a different region of the UK, and a 2-day winter conference with papers on a particular theme. We offer bursaries to students and early career professionals, and occasionally run short low-cost introductory courses for beginners.

Victorian Society

The Victorian Society is a national amenity society and the only charity dedicated to championing Victorian and Edwardian buildings in England and Wales. West Dean College
Building Conservation Masterclasses

The English Heritage-validated programme of three-day Building Conservation Masterclasses (BCMs) at West Dean provides training in technical and practical skills in the repair and maintenance of historic structures. These intensive short courses have been designed by, and are delivered by, leading practitioners in the field of building conservation. The unique ruinette – on which students can practise conservation and repair techniques – is a purpose-built structure exhibiting many of the problems found on historic buildings.

Professional Development Diploma
This is awarded in recognition of the successful completion of 10 of the BCMs and the submission of a final 3,000 word essay.

Postgraduate Diploma in Parish Church Studies: History, Heritage and Fabric

The postgraduate diploma in Parish Church Studies offers a unique opportunity to gain detailed and practical knowledge of the history, use, care and conservation of parish churches. The online format offers you the opportunity to study in your own home and somewhat at your own pace, extensively supported by an expert in the field, and learning as part of an active online community.

The only course of this type in Britain, the diploma enables those wishing to enhance their understanding of local sites of importance in order to develop new areas of expertise or those involved in the design and implementation of conservation techniques. It is equally valuable for lay staff, volunteers and those simply with a general interest in the parish landscape.

The programme starts in late September/early October, concurrent with each new academic year – places are limited to ensure a constructive atmosphere for discussions.

The MA Conservation of Historic Buildings at University of York was established in 1972. Urban Vision Enterprise CIC
